2023.4.20:Siemens and IBM Announce Major Collaboration (Highlight)

Accelerating Sustainable Product Development & Operations

On Tuesday, 18 April 2023, Siemens Digital Industries Software (Siemens) and IBM (NYSE:IBM) announced that they are expanding their long-term partnership in a significant way, collaborating to develop an offering that combines their solutions for systems engineering, service lifecycle management, and asset management. The companies believe that this new combined offering will help organizations optimize product lifecycles, make it easier to improve traceability across processes, as well as prototype and test concepts earlier in development, resulting in more sustainable product designs.

Leveraging SysML v1 standards, the companies are initially working to connect IBM Engineering System Design Rhapsody for systems engineering with solutions from Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio of software and services, including Teamcenter® software for Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Capital™ software for electrical/electronic (E/E) systems development and software implementation. This new offering also connects the IBM Maximo Application Suite for asset management with Siemens’ Teamcenter software to support an integrated digital thread between service engineering, asset management, and services execution. Siemens and IBM are also collaborating to create a SysML v2-based solution with a migration path to help customers transition to next generation systems engineering enabled by the new SysML standard.

CIMdata is encouraged to see this elevated level of cooperation between two of the leading PLM solution providers. Many of their common customers for the offerings in this new partnership already use one or more of these solutions and will greatly benefit from this enhanced collaboration. This new partnership will also significantly enhance the digital thread for customers with long-lived assets in other industries. Working together, the two companies will be able to more quickly develop and deliver a broader, and deeper suite of solutions than either could by themselves. CIMdata believes that combining the Siemens’ and IBM’s offerings can enhance sustainable development and service of the increasingly complex software-driven, electro-mechanical products demanded by today’s markets, and that this collaboration will deliver both top and bottom-line value to their customers.
